FIELD NOTE 01

How DeFi Momentum works

The screen looks for protocols whose operating fundamentals are improving faster than their token price, then adds valuation, data-quality and risk context. It narrows a research universe; it does not predict returns.

01

Confirmed Momentum

Revenue growth % − token-price change %

The default screen looks for improving fundamentals before token price catches up. Fee-derived and unknown series require at least $100K of starting weekly revenue, two positive weekly comparisons, a growth gap of +20 points or more, and a prior-week token move no greater than +10%.

  • Buyback-derived: Venice/VVV uses a 28-day settlement cycle: current 28-day revenue ≥ $400K and above the preceding 28-day total. The same 20-point gap and seven-day token-price cap still apply.
  • Not already chased: the token can be flat or down, but cannot have risen more than 10% in the latest week.
  • Positive fundamentals: falling revenue never receives a confirmed label.
  • Standard screen: advanced filters still allow broader metric and window exploration.
02

Equal-length comparisons

Buyback-derived revenue settles in monthly lumps and is measured on 28-day totals; fee-derived revenue is measured weekly. Unknown revenue uses weekly tests too. If an unknown series has one day representing more than 50% of trailing 28-day revenue, growth and qualification use each comparison period excluding its single largest day. This fallback never trims buyback-derived or fee-derived revenue, and displayed dollar totals are always untrimmed.

Week over Week compares complete seven-day totals; Month over Month compares complete 30-day totals. TVL compares point-in-time balances. A minimum starting value defaults to $100K in the standard screen.

03

Valuation

Annualized revenue ÷ circulating market cap

When at least 60 daily observations are available, annualized revenue uses the average of up to 90 days. Otherwise, it falls back to the latest 30-day run rate. Cheap means a revenue yield of 15% or more, Average means 4–15%, and Expensive means below 4%.

Because the denominator uses circulating market cap, a risk flag appears when FDV is at least 2× market cap. The label is a screening ratio, not an intrinsic-value estimate.

04

Risk and data quality

Flags use observable proxies: market-cap size, revenue concentration, reported tokenholder revenue and price-source confidence. Unlock schedules and incentive dependence are marked unverified unless the source reports them reliably.

“Unverified” means the dashboard does not know, not that the risk is absent.

FORWARD LEDGER

Discovery Log

The Discovery Log tab includes only protocols flagged during an actual live dashboard refresh. New entries use each protocol’s own Confirmed Momentum window: weekly persistence for fee-derived and unknown revenue, or the 28-day comparison and $400K floor for buyback-derived revenue. Ordinary Confirmed entries retain the +20-point gap, seven-day token move cap and 30-day cooldown. The daily featured pick is tagged Featured in this ledger and may create a separate observation, including for Fast Growers or Large Protocols. Each event stores its timestamp, entry token price, BTC price, revenue growth and growth gap. Earlier stored entries are unchanged.

Featured Discovery compares each live refresh with the prior refresh for the selected chain scope. New Confirmed Momentum qualifiers take priority over new Fast Growers, then new Large Protocols; each group ranks by revenue growth minus token price growth and trailing revenue. Tokens featured in the past seven days and unknown revenue series dominated by one day are excluded from new picks. With no new qualifier, it labels the strongest current Confirmed member as a fallback. The first refresh establishes a baseline and does not invent historical new qualifiers.

RESEARCH AUDIT

Backtest study (October 2026)

Why this study exists: the original preset criteria were selected by testing on a single six-month window, which risks overfitting: criteria chosen and judged on the same data tend to look better than they are. This study re-tested the criteria out of sample.

Design: 49 candidate criteria sets (the live criteria plus variants) were frozen in advance and run walk-forward over October 2023 to October 2026: each candidate was selected on a rolling 12-month window and scored only on the following 3 months it had never seen, across eight test windows. The universe was rebuilt to correct a construction flaw in the first study: 2,733 token-bearing protocol groups, with revenue collected per protocol across every chain it operates on, and an adapter-history gate so protocols only become eligible once their data existed. Outcomes are 30-day returns versus Bitcoin, net of a uniform 1% round-trip cost assumption, using DeFiLlama chart prices (sampled, not exchange closes).

Findings on performance: none of the 49 candidates beat Bitcoin on average. The best candidate's median 30-day result was -2.6 percentage points versus Bitcoin; the live Confirmed Momentum criteria measured -6.3 points across 269 flags; the median eligible DeFi token measured -10.4 points, so the screens rank DeFi tokens against each other better than chance without beating Bitcoin.

Findings on discovery: a separate audit asked whether the screens surface protocols that later become narrative-relevant (an objective cohort of 523 tokens defined by peak size, peak multiple, category leadership, and sustained relevance). The live screens captured 23.3% of that cohort versus 8.6% for a naive rank-by-revenue-growth baseline, about 2.7 times the rate, and captured 8.2% early (at least 30 days before the defining milestone) versus 3.3% for the baseline. The typical capture happened at the milestone rather than before it (median lead -2 days). Named cases: Derive flagged early (May 2025), Pons flagged early (July 2026), Hyperliquid and Lighter flagged late, Venice not capturable because its narrative formed before it was screen-eligible.

Limitations: fundamentals are DeFiLlama's current (restated) histories, not as-originally-published snapshots, so results are upper bounds; prices are sampled chart prices, which can miss intra-period peaks; historical market-cap and FDV figures are proxies (price times total supply) that failed validation against external FDV data and are used for rough banding only; some delisted protocols remain unrecoverable in any current registry. Conclusion: the criteria are frozen as discovery screens. They are not changed on the basis of this study, and no threshold in this product should be read as a tested predictor of returns.

Important limits

  • Backtest results (see 'Backtest study') describe discovery quality, not expected returns; the average flagged protocol trailed Bitcoin over the following 30 days in testing.
  • Volume: DEX volume shown for perpetuals protocols is derivatives volume, not spot volume. Perp volume is notional: a $100K position at 20x leverage records $100K of volume with only $5K of margin posted and no asset changing hands, while $100K of spot DEX volume is $100K of assets actually exchanged. Volume figures for perps and spot protocols are therefore not directly comparable; perp volume scales with the leverage traders use. (For scale: Hyperliquid's 30-day perp volume is roughly $214B against roughly $4.6B of spot DEX volume in the same window, per DeFiLlama.)
  • TVL can move because of asset prices, deposits, withdrawals, yield or reporting changes.
  • Bridge TVL represents custodied assets tied to activity on another chain and can double count against destination protocols; bridge-category protocols are excluded from screening, but remain available in read-only lookup.
  • Hyperliquid is one scope combining Hyperliquid L1 and HyperEVM. Market cap and price are protocol-wide; TVL and revenue follow the selected chain(s).
  • Fees are user payments; revenue is the portion retained by the protocol or stakeholders. Buybacks and burns can confer real value, but settle less frequently than transaction fees.
  • Reported revenue does not guarantee tokenholder value capture.
  • Circulating market cap can understate dilution; compare it with FDV and verify unlock schedules.
  • Even a 90-day revenue average can be distorted by changing incentives, seasonality or adapter changes.
  • Adapters and protocol definitions can change, creating breaks in historical comparability.
